Dental Oncology Unit, School of Dentistry, University of Athens
Continuing education seminars are organized by the School of Dentistry, University of Athens to the hospital and private dentists. The program includes 14 hours of education.
Table 2 shows (Greek version) the name of the dentists (and the work place), who attended these seminars last year.
This academic year the seminars will be held as follows:

Scope and aims of the Seminar
Scope: To give to the dentist the necessary knowledge to communicate and manage the dental needs of the oncology patient.
Aims, after the completion of the seminar the dentist:
- will have the basic knowledge about the different oncology therapies in order to communicate with the oncologist.
- will have the basic knowledge about the systemic complications of oncology therapies
- will have the basic knowledge of oral complications of cancer therapies
- will know the interrelations and interactions of systemic and oral complications
- will have the basic knowledge to communicate with the cancer patient
- will know the purpose of the dental assessment before cancer therapy
- will be able to define the most appropriate treatment before, during and after cancer therapy
- will know the possibilities and limitations of dental management in each mode and phase of cancer therapy
- will be able to support the patient with the most appropriate program of oral care and to reduce the oral pain, in co-operation with the oncologist, so that the patient will live with "a good quality of life, as he understands it".
